Mikul, while he can write fiction well, uses a style in this book that is a mix of journalism with clear affection for the subject matter, ensuring the book is readable and engrossing. This book is epic. The author includes for categories for consideration: contrarians, theorists, visionaries, and entertainers. All of my favorites are here: visionaries with horrible personal quirks, like Tesla and his pigeons, or Howard Hughes and his jars of pee and hotel room bunkers; writers like Burroughs and artists like Warhol; the guy that built the coral castle down in Florida; This book is epic.

Collected Journalism and Short Fiction

All of my favorites are here: visionaries with horrible personal quirks, like Tesla and his pigeons, or Howard Hughes and his jars of pee and hotel room bunkers; writers like Burroughs and artists like Warhol; the guy that built the coral castle down in Florida; and Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese soldier who was still operating command-style until , unaware that WW2 had ended. But what makes this book such a joy is that I could flip open to any random page and find someone I didn't even know existed, people who were janitors by day but wrote 11,page novels at night, only discovered after their death; people building castles and starting cults and living on a dollar a year even though they were millionaires and digging out massive underground gardens in Fresno that looked like Italian catacombs.

As a kid, I practically memorized the Guinness book of world records, so I absolutely eat this stuff up. This book is the ultimate bathroom reader, something to open to a random page for a quick entry or two, but it's also hugely entertaining to read from A to Z. Keep a copy of wikipedia handy and wander down the k-hole when you find a good entry, but be warned that this could make the book take a month to finish. Highly recommended.

Jun 02, Michael Kelly rated it it was amazing. A large and enthralling volume, which gives mini biographies of a large number of the oddest people in the world. Eccentrics, oddballs, weirdoes, they're all here, but so are artists, visionaries, anyone who thinks outside the box or is outside the ordinary. Every one a rare gem!

I love eccentrics, people who aren't afraid to follow their own vision and to hell with anyone else, flipping the finger at conformity. I have discovered a large number of books I want to read, music I want to listen to a A large and enthralling volume, which gives mini biographies of a large number of the oddest people in the world. I have discovered a large number of books I want to read, music I want to listen to and art I want to view by reading this fascinating book. Every entry is a breath of fresh air. The only fault with the book is that a little further proof-reading might have been nice.

There are a few glaring errors, mostly with dates or other figures for example, in one place 20 feet is equated with 60 metres, when the reverse is actually the case. A minor thing, and once spotted, a little common sense usually discerns what the correct entry was supposed to be, but a little disappointing.

The Eccentropedia – Chris Mikul – A Book Review

Antique Marks Collins Need to Know? Finger Cymbals: Play Them Correctly. Joseph Documents results. Cory Mull. Celebrity Competition Show Breakdown. His tomb, newly restored by a grant from the Irish government, is protected by a glass screen, the graveyard equivalent of a buffet sneeze guard, shielding it, like a force-field around a holy-relic, from devotees who have defaced and kissed the stonework to the edge of disrepair.

Today the glass is covered in red lipstick and felt-tip verses, and I wondered if his legions of mourners knew that Oscar used to mill around Oxford walking a lobster on a short length of white string. Eccentricity in simple terms can be summed up as doing exactly what you wish without a care for the opinions of others. To harmless ends of course. The eccentric has largely, since the eighteenth century, been a character associated with our islands, but they are, in truth, to be found anywhere where freedom of expression is left unfettered.

In his charmingly detailed and informative new book, The Eccentropedia, Australian writer Chris Mikul lists some of the most unusual people who have ever lived and considers their eccentric lives and achievements in a brief biography of each. The theorists instead of refusing to conform to society believe they have something to offer it, a grand idea which will revolutionise the way we live our lives or alter our perception of the universe and our place within it.

They are often wide of the mark, like Dr. Charlotte Bach, who claimed that all creatures have an inborn desire to become the opposite sex, she was later revealed to be a man. Or William Chidley, whose unrealistic sexual notions combined with vegetarianism and nudism, would, he believed, save humanity from itself. Every now and then though someone does skim awfully close to a revelation, like Cyrus Teed, who believed we were living inside a hollow earth which makes sense if you think about it and suspend GCSE science for a moment although this delusion does lose some of its romantic allure when you learn that Teed also believed he was the second Christ.

Nevertheless, he did attract some followers, and their attempt to create a New Jerusalem in Florida, a community formed upon communist ideals, was deemed, briefly, to be one of the more successful attempts at a utopia.
